Guide to Purchasing the Right Snorkel for Your Needs
What do you need a snorkel for? The answer to this question determines what type of snorkel to buy. This question that you need to ask yourself is actually the basis for the different snorkel designs in the market. The snorkel designed for scuba diving is not the best for snorkeling, and this is true the other way around.
Choose the best snorkeling snorkel if that is what you intend to use it for. What most people purchase today are dry snorkels. This means that water does not enter the snorkel. When diving under water or when a wave goes over you, water won’t enter the snorkel. This means that you don’t have to get the water out to breathe. If you are going to buy a snorkel for snorkeling choose one that is not big and bulky. Ideally, one should choose a dry snorkel that is low profile, or not big and bulky. Big and bulky snorkels can make a mask leak because of its weight since they pull on the mask strap. Leaking masks causes frustration to many people since they know that they masks fit perfectly. Simply taking off the snorkel off the mask will solve this problem. This means only one thing, you are using a big and bulky snorkel.
There should be a good system of attaching snorkels to the mask strap. Sliding the snorkel up and down and side to side on the mask strap is possible with a good strap system. Your mask strap then will not be pulled when you put your snorkel in your mouth comfortably.
You should take extra care when purchasing a snorkel with many special features. There are snorkel features such as a dry top, 2 purges, and a flex tube mouthpiece that may be beneficial, but these are designed for heavy bulky snorkels. You can’t have a low profile snorkel with all these features. If you know the benefits and drawbacks of special features on a snorkel, then you can buy one with many features.
You should also have a snorkel for scuba diving. You sometimes need a snorkel when you surface after scuba diving so you don’t struggle on the water. If you are still away from the dive boat, you air can run out. But, if you have a snorkel you can simply swim back to the boat. If you want to preserve air in your tank while you are on the surface, then you should use a snorkel. If you save air in your tank this means more time for diving under water.
Get a low profile snorkel if you are going to use it for scuba diving. The snorkel should be a small one so it does not disturb your face since it drops comfortably to the side when not in use.
